The three essential roles of school

le role de l'ecole

School is a central institution in our society. It occupies a preponderant place in the transmission of knowledge, the construction of individual and collective identity, and the training of tomorrow's citizens. This is why it is appropriate to highlight the three main roles that the school plays in this process:

  1. Instruction to transmit fundamental knowledge
  2. Socialization to learn to live together
  3. The integration of a common core of values and knowledge to build a national and civic identity.

The role of instruction: a foundation of knowledge for all

From the first years, the school's primary mission is to ensure the instruction students. By teaching a variety of subjects ranging from mathematics to human sciences, including languages, artistic education and even physical and sports education, it allows children and adolescents toacquire intellectual knowledge. This accumulation of knowledge gives them the tools necessary to understand the world around them and develop their skills throughout their professional lives.

Learn to read, write and count

To begin with, primary school aims in particular to ensure sufficient mastery of fundamentals, namely reading, writing and calculation. These skills are essential to allow students to then access more complex knowledge and develop their personal talents in different areas.

The importance of a versatile education

By gradually expanding the spectrum of subjects taught, the school also offers students the opportunity to discover new horizons. Thus, not only limiting themselves to the literary and scientific fields, adolescents can also learn about artistic or sporting practices which will contribute to their personal development.

The role of socialization: learning to live together

The school also plays a vital role in terms of socialization. Indeed, it represents a place of learning where students will learn to cooperate and interact with their classmates. This includes developing social skills such as respect, listening and empathy.

Peer interactions

In contact with their classmates, the students discover social and cultural codes that govern our society. They will thus become familiar with notions such as rules of politeness, work ethics and even collective values. Exchanging with other students also allows them to develop empathy and effective communication.

Relations with authority

The school is also an environment where students are brought to meet and interact with authority figures, which often constitute their first experiences with it. Teachers play a fundamental role here by exercising caring and formative authority, ensuring that they support the personal development of each student while ensuring cohesion within the group.

The role of integration: building a common identity

Finally, the school also has the mission of building collective identity, by instilling in younger generations fundamental values such as secularism, citizenship and respect for human rights. This results in particular in the transmission of a common core of knowledge and values shared by all students.

Citizenship education

From this perspective, the school's particular vocation is to train future citizens by instilling in them the key principles of a democratic and republican society. By actively participating in the life of their establishment (for example via high school bodies), students gradually learn to express themselves, debate or even make collective decisions.

A national history and a shared culture

The teaching of national history and culture is also a key element of this integration mission. Through these lessons, students must understand how French identity was formed and their place in it. This will allow them to understand and respect the heritage of the past, while being actors in the construction of a common future.

Beyond these three essential roles, the school of course plays other important functions, such as preparation for careers and professional integration or even individual development through the choice of training and educational paths. However, successful education will always involve instruction, socialization and integration to allow each student to flourish and contribute to the progress of our society.
